By-Stander

By-Stander is a large installation that creates an immersive experience for the viewer through the use of: photography, video, and sound. Through the use of these mediums, the captured everyday city scenes are created to surround and overwhelm the spectator.

By projecting video work onto hanging photography, parts of the video are brought forward to the spectator's view which creates and confusing and alluring experience. This installation is finished with Sound Art. The spectator is surrounded with an over-lay of sounds captured from the environment which feel over-whelming. Through the edit of the sounds surrounding, the viewer turns to specific scenes at the focused audio points. 

 

Throughout the viewing, the spectator is made aware of the importance of the process in this art. This is shown to the viewer through a short piece of text:

"Four journeys have been undertaken in four different cities with guidelines and rules to truly capture the urban environment. 2500 steps have been taken, starting from getting out the transport (train, car etc). Every 30 steps a photo was taken. Simultaneously, every 90 steps a 30 second video was captured too. These have been reconstructed through this installation to create an immersive experience of the four cities for you."
